He is showing little signs of slowing down at Liverpool, having scored seven and added the same amount of assists in 12 games so far this season. Speaking to , former Liverpool captain – who is now managing out in Saudi Arabia – opened up on what he’s been told about Salah, and how he keeps himself at the top of his game.

“I’m not surprised, because I think he’s obsessed with the game,” Gerrard said. “I think you can see the body shape, you can see his routine. You know, I obviously follow his social media, and I always talk to a lot of people.

“I always pick John’s (Achterberg’s) brain and what would he like on a database. John says he’s really obsessed to be the best, and he wants to break records. He wants to be remembered as the best.

“So I’m not surprised in terms of how he approaches his profession. And I think he’s going to be one of these players that we’ll all appreciate even more when the day eventually comes when he moves on. I hope we still get another couple of years out of Mo Salah.

“I think he can deliver for many more years because of his shape, his professionalism. So I hope he stays. I hope we get more out of him, but I’m not surprised because the ones that are obsessed of the profession and they’ve got that level of talent, it’s no surprise that the consistent levels are there all the time.”

Liverpool.com says: We all know about Salah’s determination to be the best, but it’s good to hear a former Liverpool coach (Achterberg) talking about it. It certainly gives you more encouragement that he might extend his stay at Anfield – it’s certainly not time for him to head to Saudi Arabia when he still has plenty to offer.
