The one Tottenham player at risk of Champions League suspension ahead of Monaco

Tottenham face Monaco on Wednesday night hoping to make it three games out of three undefeated in the UEFA Champions League. Thomas Frank's side have so far beaten Villarreal and drawn to Bodo/Glimt in Europe's premier competition.

Spurs are currently 12th in the 36-team league but know a win in Monaco will propel them into the top eight. The Lilywhites, though, are without a number of players as Frank ponders his team selection.

Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies missed training on Tuesday and have not travelled to Monaco. Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Radu Dragusin, Yves Bissouma and Dominic Solanke are also injured, while Mathys Tel and Kota Takai were left out of Spurs' Champions League squad entirely.

Tottenham go into the clash on the back of a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on Sunday and Frank has welcomed the chance to play again so quickly. “Yeah, that is the good thing with playing the games so shortly after each other, you just progress and move onto the next one," he told reporters on Tuesday.

"I think the good thing with the Villa game is overall a very good performance looking back. I was pleased with a lot of things and now we need to take a lot of the bits into the game tomorrow against Monaco, which is a very good team, with very good players and they already started the campaign quite well with a draw against (Manchester) City. Last year they beat Villa, they beat Barcelona so clearly, clearly a very talented team.”

With so many injuries, Frank cannot afford any more players picking up knocks or even suspensions. One player in particular will need to be careful of picking up a yellow card.

Micky van de Ven has already received two yellow cards in the Champions League this season and, should he pick up a third, will be suspended for Spurs' next match. So, that means should Van de Ven pick up a yellow against Monaco on Wednesday, he will be suspended for Tottenham's next match against Copenhagen on November 4.

Article 63.03 of UEFA's regulations of the Champions League states: "As from the first match in the league phase, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after three cautions, that did not result in a red card, as well as after any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.)."

As well as Monaco and Copenhagen, Frank's side will also face PSG, Slavia Praha, Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt in the league phase of the competition. Van de Ven, who is expected to partner Kevin Danso at the heart of defence, will be intent on not picking up his third yellow of the season in Europe already.
