Bihar Government Launches Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana: Women to Receive ₹10,000 for 18 Selected Activities
The Bihar government has officially released the guidelines for the newly announced Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, a scheme aimed at empowering women through self-employment opportunities. Under this program, women will receive ₹10,000 as the first installment to start small-scale businesses or income-generating activities.
This initiative, launched ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, is being seen as a major step by the Nitish Kumar government to strengthen women’s economic independence. The scheme is designed to benefit women from every household in the state who wish to set up their own livelihood ventures.
How the Scheme WorksAccording to the official guidelines, women who want to avail themselves of the benefits must be members of a Jeevika Self-Help Group (SHG). The financial support of ₹10,000 will be disbursed through these groups to ensure transparency and accountability.
The government has also finalized the application format for the scheme. Beneficiaries are expected to start receiving funds within this month, marking the rollout of the first phase of the program.
In addition to the initial support, the government has planned a six-month performance review of the activities started by women. Based on their progress, beneficiaries could become eligible for further financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh. To promote sustainability, the government also intends to establish haat bazaars (local markets) in villages and towns, where women can sell their products directly to customers.
18 Activities Eligible for Financial AidFor the first phase, the Bihar government has prepared a list of 18 specific activities under which women can receive the initial ₹10,000 assistance. These activities have been identified as practical livelihood options suitable for both rural and semi-urban women. The detailed list, as mentioned in the guidelines, ensures that women can choose work aligned with their skills and resources.
Some examples of these eligible activities include:
-
Dairy and animal husbandry
-
Poultry farming
-
Goat rearing
-
Vegetable cultivation
-
Food processing and pickle-making
-
Tailoring and embroidery work
-
Small retail shops
-
Handicrafts and local art-based businesses
The scheme is expected to expand its scope in the future, allowing more women to join and diversify their income streams.
Why This Scheme MattersBihar has one of the largest populations of women engaged in informal and agricultural work. However, access to financial resources has remained a major challenge. By directly providing startup capital, the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana is expected to:
-
Enhance women’s participation in the local economy
-
Encourage entrepreneurship in rural areas
-
Reduce dependency on traditional wage labor
-
Create sustainable income opportunities for families
Experts believe that the scheme not only provides immediate financial relief but also lays the foundation for long-term economic empowerment of women in Bihar.
Government’s VisionThe Nitish Kumar government has consistently highlighted women’s empowerment as a priority. Earlier, initiatives like bicycle schemes for girl students and reservations in local bodies were praised as transformative steps. With this new employment scheme, the state is aiming to create self-reliant women entrepreneurs who can contribute actively to Bihar’s economic growth.
As the rollout begins, the government has urged women to apply through their nearest self-help groups and make the most of the financial support.
