New Delhi, July 4, 2025 – The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has rolled out new guidelines aimed at strengthening the “One Person, One Aadhaar” policy. The official notification outlines rules concerning duplicate Aadhaar numbers, data accuracy, and an updated list of acceptable documents for Aadhaar enrolment and updates. This step is part of UIDAI’s broader initiative to enhance identity security, prevent fraud, and improve transparency in Aadhaar services.
🔄 What Happens If You Have Two Aadhaar Numbers?According to UIDAI's latest rules:
-
Only one Aadhaar number per individual will be considered valid.
-
The Aadhaar with complete biometric data (fingerprints, iris scan, etc.) will be retained as the valid ID.
-
If both Aadhaar numbers have incomplete biometrics, then the one issued first will be deemed valid.
-
Any secondary or duplicate Aadhaar number will be declared invalid and cancelled, ensuring no individual holds multiple identification records.
UIDAI received numerous complaints regarding individuals inadvertently holding two Aadhaar cards, which led to identity confusion and potential misuse in government schemes.
To address this, UIDAI has now clearly defined which Aadhaar number will be considered authentic, helping eliminate duplication and reinforcing trust in India’s most widely used digital ID system.
🛠️ What Should You Do If You Have Two Aadhaar Numbers? If you suspect that multiple Aadhaar numbers have been issued in your name:
Visit your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra (Aadhaar service center).
UIDAI will verify your biometric data and decide which Aadhaar number remains active.
The other Aadhaar ID will be deactivated and invalidated.
This process ensures that no individual misuses dual identities to avail multiple benefits or mislead official systems.
📋 New Document List for Aadhaar Enrolment and UpdatesUIDAI has also released a revised list of valid documents for applying or updating Aadhaar. The documents differ depending on age group, citizenship status, and update type. Here are the essentials:
