Send Push

Apoorva Mukhija, better known as The Rebel Kid, has been a force to reckon with on social media for some time. From spilling the tea with her unfiltered opinions to catching the internet’s eye, she’s carved a unique space for herself. But now, as we gear up for Cannes 2025, the burning question is: will Apoorva dare to make her debut on the red carpet or will the infamous online hate hold her back?

Apoorva Mukhija’s India’s Got Latent controversy

After a rocky spell in the spotlight, particularly following her role as a panellist on India’s Got Latent, where a comment made towards a contestant sent the internet into a frenzy, Apoorva became the target of relentless abuse. We’re talking about nasty, violent threats, everything from rape and death threats to the chilling promise of acid attacks. To say it shook her would be an understatement.

However, as the storm passed, Apoorva bounced back stronger. In April, she bravely opened up about her ordeal, shedding light on her side of the story. And now, with Cannes just around the corner, it looks like she’s ready to step back into the limelight. But there’s a catch.

Apoorva Mukhija’s take on her Cannes debut: “I don’t want to…”

When the entertainment agency Social Ketchup took to Instagram and asked their followers who they’d love to see strut down the Cannes red carpet, Apoorva threw some serious shade with her response. “Gaali nahi khaani,” she said with a wink. Translation: "I don’t want to get abused." It was a light-hearted jab at the possibility of facing more online vitriol if she did indeed take the plunge into international glamour.

But there’s more to this story than just a snarky Instagram comment. During a recent appearance on BraveTalk with Nikhil, Apoorva revealed how the backlash didn’t just affect her, it rocked her family, too. “My mum started getting all sorts of abuse, including rape threats,” she shared.

The revelation was both gut-wrenching and eye-opening. Apparently, for the first few days of the controversy, Apoorva was so consumed by the hate that she didn’t realise the toll it was taking on her mother. “I didn’t know until my brother told me about Mum’s blood pressure shooting up. She had to switch her account to private. It was painful to see.”

So, while the world may be waiting for The Rebel Kid to make her Cannes debut, the question remains: can she deal with the kind of hate that follows her wherever she goes? One thing’s for sure, Apoorva’s not one to shy away from the drama. Whether it’s on social media or in the glamorous streets of Cannes, the world’s watching, and The Rebel Kid is ready for the next chapter, but only on her terms.
