As Jharkhand prepares for the upcoming assembly elections, the Hemant Soren government’s flagship ‘Maiya Samman Yojana‘, aimed at empowering women, is under intense scrutiny following a disturbing incident. On October 11, Gulshan Khatoon, a pregnant woman, was forced to give birth on the road outside Ranchi’s Sadar Hospital after being denied admission. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, exposing the deep-rooted failures of Jharkhand’s healthcare system.
Khatoon, referred to RIMS hospital due to delivery complications, could not secure an ambulance, leading to the traumatic delivery outside the hospital. This shocking incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of the state’s healthcare services, as well as the government’s ability to protect the safety and health of women.
Public Outcry Over Healthcare Failures:The incident has triggered a wave of criticism, particularly on social media, where users have pointed out the irony of promoting schemes like Maiya Samman Yojana while failing to provide basic healthcare access. Some have remarked that if essential hospital services were available, such schemes wouldn’t be necessary.
One social media user highlighted the poor state of Ranchi’s Sadar Hospital, calling attention to the lack of basic facilities. Another person criticized the government’s failure to ensure that Dalits and tribals, who already face significant barriers, receive the medical care they need.
Government Investigation LaunchedIn response to the public outrage, Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s administration has launched an inquiry into the incident. Ranchi’s Deputy Commissioner has formed a team to investigate the matter and report any negligence. While Khatoon’s condition is reportedly stable, the incident has raised serious concerns about the state of Jharkhand’s healthcare infrastructure.
Critics argue that while Maiya Samman Yojana offers financial aid, it fails to address the core issues of healthcare access and women’s safety. The lack of ambulances and hospital services for those in need remains a major concern, further questioning the government’s ability to manage critical medical situations.
Systemic Healthcare IssuesGovernment hospitals in Jharkhand are notorious for their poor conditions, with many lacking essential amenities, cleanliness, and functioning medical equipment. Patients are often forced to wait in unhygienic conditions, and critical cases are delayed due to a lack of resources. In a recent case in Dhanbad, a patient was turned away from treatment due to outdated equipment.
The shortage of medical personnel further exacerbates these problems. Despite Jharkhand’s population of over 4 crore, the state’s government hospitals have an alarming ratio of just one doctor and three nurses per lakh population.
Political FalloutThe opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seized upon the healthcare crisis to attack the Hemant Soren government. They argue that while government schemes are well-advertised, they have failed to deliver meaningful improvements on the ground. Local residents and health workers echo this sentiment, stressing that policies must be better implemented to achieve real results.
With elections approaching, the pressure is mounting on the Soren administration to address these glaring healthcare issues. Public dissatisfaction is growing, and without significant reforms, it could have a lasting impact on the electoral outcome.
The Maiya Samman Yojana, meant to empower women, is now mired in controversy as the state’s healthcare system falters under the spotlight. Without urgent improvements, such incidents may continue to undermine the government’s credibility and its ability to provide for its citizens.
