In the golden era of Hindi cinema, few onscreen pairs exuded as much charm and chemistry as Mumtaz and Shashi Kapoor. With films like Prem Kahani, Pyaar Kiye Jaa, Sanskar, and Chor Machaye Shor, the two delivered memorable performances that won over audiences with their effortless camaraderie and classic Bollywood glamour. Whether it was a romantic track or a light-hearted comic scene, the duo lit up the screen with a spark that fans still remember fondly. However, Mumtaz wanted to marry Shammi Kapoor.
Mumtaz also reflected on her admiration for Shammi Kapoor. She said, “Shammi Kapoor was a handsome good-looking man” and that both “were attracted to each other.” She admitted that despite the 17-18 years of age gap, she had once seriously wanted to marry him. But the match didn’t materialise because of Raj Kapoor’s strict family traditions that didn’t allow the women of the house to work in films after marriage. That decision even cost her a role in Mera Naam Joker, as concerns over costume choices reportedly came in the way.
She said that since she would have had to wear short clothes, but Raj Kapoor worried that what if she got married to Shammi Kapoor. Despite making it clear that she is not marrying Shammi Kapoor, she was still not given the role. “He did not want to take any chance, and I respect that”, she said.
She shared that she did not sign for two films, 1971’s Andaz and Seeta Aur Geeta because there was an understanding between her and Shammi Kapoor, that she will not work with him again.
