Method of fasting
If you are going to keep Vat Savitri fast for the first time this year, then it is very important to follow some important rules, so that you can get the full benefit of the fast. On the day of the fast, take a bath in the morning wear clean red or yellow clothes, and take a vow to fast.

Then worship the Vat i.e. Banyan tree, offer water to its roots and wrap raw thread or Kalawa. After this, do seven parikramas of the Vat tree. Listen to or recite the story of Savitri Vrat and do Aarti. Next day, eat eleven soaked gram and break the fast.

Rules of the fast

It is considered best to do this fast without water. Also, women should do sixteen adornments on this day. After the puja, blessings of elders should be taken. On this day, it is auspicious to donate fruits, food, clothes etc. in a basket to a needy or Brahmin.

How to do parikrama of Vat tree

The circumambulation of the Vat tree should always be done in a clockwise direction (dakshinavarti). While doing parikrama, thread or Kalava is wrapped around the tree seven times.
