On hearing the word sky, a blue sheet appears in front of the eyes. But have you ever wondered why the sky is blue? And when everything looks black from space, why does the sky look blue from the earth?
The answer to this question is very interesting and if you like to read or know about science (sky color facts), then you must read this article. Let's understand why the sky looks blue.

Sunlight and color
Sunlight appears white, but in reality, it is made up of seven colors (violet, blue, sky blue, green, yellow, orange, red), which we call spectrum. When this light enters the earth's atmosphere, it collides with air molecules and dust particles, due to which light scatters.

Rayleigh Scattering Law

The main reason for the blue color of the sky is "Rayleigh's Scattering Law". According to this law, the scattering of different colors of light depends on their wavelength. Colors with short wavelengths (such as blue and violet) scatter more, while colors with long wavelengths (such as red and yellow) scatter less.

Because the wavelength of the blue color (about 450495 nanometers) is very small, it collides with the molecules of nitrogen and oxygen present in the atmosphere and spreads in all directions. This is why we see the sky blue.

Why blue instead of violet color?

A question arises that the wavelength of violet color is less than blue, then why does the sky not look purple? The reason for this is that -
Human eyes are more sensitive to blue color, while they are less able to see violet color.

Therefore, despite more scattering of violet color, we see the sky blue.

Why does the sky look red at sunrise and sunset?
During sunrise and sunset, the sun's rays have to travel a longer distance in the atmosphere. During this time, blue and short wavelength light gets scattered and only long wavelength colors (red, orange) can reach our eyes. That is why the sky appears red-orange during sunrise and sunset.
