Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Cheetah project of Kuno National Park has crossed all barriers and now it is bearing fruits. As many as 19 cubs born to five different female cheetahs have emerged as the beacon holder of hope and are future of the cheetah project.
Their mothers are raising them in a dedicated manner. Out of nineteen cubs, seven were born this year itself. Two cubs of Veera are three months old. The scene wherein Veera is resting under the shadow of a tree inside the enclosure and cradling both cubs will win the heart of anyone.
Veera becomes alert and protective towards cubs when she hears even rustling sound of leaves. Likewise, female cheetah Nirvah is nursing five cubs less than one month old. She is taking care of cubs like a dedicated mother. Jwala’s four cubs are 15 months old and they are learning the basics of hunting and surviving under her watchful eyes.
Asha is mother of three cubs which are 16 months old. They too are learning basic chapters of life. Mukhi, who was the first born cheetah cub on the soil of Kuno National Park is now two years old.
The saga of Mukhi is not less than a heart wrenching story. After some time of birth ‘Mukhi’ and other cubs, born to female cheetah ‘Jwala’, suffered dehydaration due to scorching heat. By the time forest officials intervened, Mukhi’s siblings have perished.
After treatment at hospital, Mukhi managed to overcome from dehydration problem. When forest officers tried to reunite Mukhi with mother Jwala, the latter refused to accept. Hence Mukhi is a hand raised cheetah cub. In the meantime, Kuno officials are ecstatic to see the cheetah’s cubs running here and there along with their mothers.
They know well that once these cubs become adults, they will take the cheetah project ahead with pride.
