Mumbai’s iconic Byculla Zoo, officially known as Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, has released a stunning new video titled Waghobachi Goshta (The Tiger’s Tale) in celebration of International Tiger Day. The short film offers a captivating glimpse into the majestic presence of the tiger and its pivotal role in the ecosystem.

Narrated in an evocative style, the video highlights how a tiger’s mere scent can send ripples of fear across the jungle. Animals become alert, cautious, and retreat into silence. The tiger doesn't need to chase attention- its very existence commands respect. As apex predators, tigers regulate prey populations, ensuring the balance of species across forests. The jungle, it reminds us, doesn’t function in chaos but finds order in the presence of this mighty creature.

Currently, Byculla Zoo houses two magnificent Royal Bengal tigers- Shakti and Karishma-who have become popular among visitors for their regal appearance and playful cubs. Their offspring, Jay and Rudra, are the zoo’s pride, often spotted tumbling through the foliage under their mother’s watchful gaze. In November 2021, the zoo welcomed another addition: a female cub named Veera, bringing hope for conservation and continuity.
This tiger family is not just a crowd-puller but a living reminder of India’s deep-rooted connection with its wildlife heritage.

Why International Tiger Day Matters
International Tiger Day, celebrated every year on July 29, is a global reminder of the urgent need to protect tigers and their habitats. With fewer than 4,000 wild tigers left worldwide, their survival hangs in the balance due to poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. Days like these raise awareness, spark conservation efforts, and encourage governments and communities to prioritize wildlife protection. Tigers are more than symbols of strength- they’re keystone species whose presence signals a healthy ecosystem. Celebrating them is celebrating biodiversity, ecological balance, and our responsibility as stewards of nature.
