For the first time in 13 years, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray visited Matoshree – the iconic Thackeray residence in Mumbai – to wish his cousin and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on his 65th birthday. Raj’s last visit to Matoshree was in 2012, following the death of Balasaheb Thackeray.
The visit, which was not anticipated by even close aides of Uddhav, has revived speculation about a possible alliance between the two estranged Thackeray cousins.
Sources revealed that the decision to visit Matoshree was taken by Raj on Sunday morning itself. Raj contacted Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut to inform him of his intention to personally wish Uddhav. Raut promptly relayed the message to Uddhav, who prepared to receive his cousin.
Raj left his residence ‘Shivtirth’ in Dadar and arrived at Matoshree shortly afterward. As news of his arrival spread, excitement surged among Shiv Sena (UBT) supporters gathered outside. Chanting “Jai Maharashtra,” party workers surrounded Raj’s vehicle at the entrance.
In a rare gesture, Uddhav himself came out to the gate to welcome Raj. The two leaders warmly hugged each other as Raj handed over a vibrant red bouquet of roses, offering heartfelt birthday wishes.
Raut personally escorted Raj inside, as both leaders greeted supporters from a stage set up outside Matoshree. They then moved inside for a closed-door interaction that lasted about 15–20 minutes.

Interestingly, Raj referred to Uddhav as “my elder brother, the Shiv Sena party chief,” further hinting at a possible thaw in their strained relationship.
Political analysts believe this visit could be a precursor to a broader alliance between the MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT), particularly ahead of the upcoming Mumbai municipal elections.
