In a landmark initiative to promote menstrual and reproductive health among women in uniformed services, the Himveer Wives’ Welfare Association (HWWA) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), in collaboration with SHEWings Foundation, organised a comprehensive awareness seminar at the 22nd Battalion, ITBP, Tigri Camp, New Delhi, on the occasion of Menstrual Hygiene Day.
Titled "Menstrual and Reproductive Health for Women in Forward Deployment," the seminar aimed to equip ITBP’s women personnel with vital knowledge, medical guidance, and hygienic practices to manage menstruation and related health challenges, particularly in remote and high-risk deployment areas.
The event was graced by Dr. Vijaya K. Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, who lauded the initiative and called for open, respectful conversations around menstruation. Sharing a personal anecdote, Dr. Rahatkar said, "When your daughter experiences her first period, talk to her, celebrate the moment within the family with dignity and grace." She fondly recalled how her grandmother's warmth and support helped shape her own understanding of menstruation.
A panel discussion featuring prominent gynaecologists and public health experts provided scientific insights and addressed queries from participants. The panel included Dr. Gauri Agarwal, Dr. Mamta Goel, Dr. Shyam Sundar, Dr. Prerna Sharma, Dr. Preeti, Bina Mansukh, and Harshika, all of whom were felicitated for their contributions to women’s health and awareness.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Gauri Rasgotra, President of HWWA, emphasized the broader implications of menstrual health: “This programme reaffirms that menstrual hygiene is not just a health issue—it encompasses the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of women.”
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Smt. Harshika Burman, Secretary, HWWA, who acknowledged the contributions of dignitaries, speakers, participants, and partner organizations in making the event impactful.
This initiative reflects the Government of India’s commitment—under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi—to advancing women-led development and inclusive public health. It is aligned with the national vision of "Swasth Nari, Swasth Desh"—a healthier, more empowered India for all women, including those serving at the frontlines of national security.
