Cases of breast cancer are increasing rapidly all over the world. Statistics show that the young population is also falling prey to it rapidly. This is the most common type of cancer in women. In the year 2022, about 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer were reported in women, while it caused 670,000 deaths worldwide. This is the second most common type of cancer worldwide.
Health experts say that women of any age, whether young or adult, can be victims of breast cancer. Lifestyle, dietary disturbances as well as many types of environmental factors are also seen to play a role in this. All women need to be careful about breast cancer from an early age. Women who have had breast cancer in their family are at greater risk.
Every year, the month of October is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month to educate and make people aware of breast cancer. To prevent this cancer, it is important to have the right information. Let's know the myths and facts related to breast cancer.
Myth - Only women get breast cancer
Breast cancer is commonly known as a cancer that occurs in women. However, it is not right to assume that it is a disease that occurs only in women. Global data shows that men can also be at risk of breast cancer.
According to the report of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, this year, it is estimated that about 2,800 men may be diagnosed with breast cancer and 530 died. Health experts say that if any man is also having problems like a lump or bleeding from the nipple, then he should get it checked.
Myth - Lumping the breast means you have breast cancer.
Lumping the breast is considered one of the most common symptoms of breast cancer, although lumping does not always mean cancer. Sometimes lymphoma (fat accumulation) can also be the cause of lump formation. However, health experts say, that if you notice a new lump in the breast or any change in the breast tissue, then get it diagnosed in time. Through breast imaging tests, it can be ascertained whether the lump is normal or the cause of cancer.
Myth - Wearing a bra can cause breast cancer
You must have heard or read on the internet that wearing a bra can cause breast cancer, although health experts say that there is no medical evidence of this. Some reports have said that wearing a bra, especially an underwire style bra, can block the flow of lymph fluid from the breast, which can cause toxins to accumulate in the tissues. However, there is no evidence of cancer due to this.
Myth - Eating too much sugar causes breast cancer.
Consumption of high-sugar items has been considered harmful to health in many ways, but there is not enough evidence to show that it increases the risk of breast cancer.
All the cells of our body, whether cancerous or healthy, use the sugar (glucose) present in the blood as fuel. Cancer cells indeed use sugar more quickly than normal cells. One study on mice found that eating more sugar may increase their risk of breast cancer, but more research is needed to confirm this in humans.
