US President Donald Trump has said Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show was suspended because he “is not a talented person and had bad ratings”.
The TV star, 57, had fronted his eponymous show for more than 20 years, but it was axed after he made controversial comments following the death of Charlie Kirk. The American activist was shot dead at a debate in Utah last week, with Kimmel making a comment about the incident on his show.
Jimmy took to the ABC programme to call out what he said he thought was hypocrisy in how Republicans have responded to the death of Kirk. But his actions were met with a heavy hand by bosses at the organisation her pulled his show from air. Donald, currently on a state visit to the UK, addressed the sudden dismissal of the long-running programme.

He said: "Well, Jimmy Kimmel was fired because he had bad ratings, more than anything else. And he said a horrible thing about a great gentleman known as Charlie Kirk.
Going deeper into the attack on the comedian before addressing the controversy of the comments made about Kirk, Trump added: “And Jimmy Kimmel is not a talented person. He had very bad ratings, and they should have fired him a long time ago. So, you know, you could call that free speech or not. He was fired for lack of talent.”
The comments that led to Kimmel's show being suddenly taken off air included: "Many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalise on the murder of Charlie Kirk."
He also said on Monday's programme: "We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterise this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them."
Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar's broadcasting division, said it "strongly objects" to Kimmel's comments. And it's a decision US president Donald Trump is fully on board with. The POTUS took to Truth Social to say "congratulations to ABC" and "Kimmel has ZERO talent". But his views weren't matched by all, with other big-name stars hitting out at the axing.
These were deemed "offensive and insensitive" by Nexstar Communications Group, which operates 23 ABC affiliates, and ABC itself moved swiftly on Wednesday. Kimmel, himself, is yet to comment on ABC's move but President Donald Trump brazenly posted on Truth Social: "Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done."
Kimmel's contract is up in May next year, though, and insiders believe he is now "looking for ways to get out" of the deal. It is believed Kimmel, 57, is set to go on Stephen Colbert's show in the US in the coming days as Colbert - a Democrat - has also been criticised by Mr Trump after his show was axed by CBS in the summer.
The source told theDaily Mail: "They both are in the same predicament with being against the Trump administration, and they are now looking to do something together to fight for what they believe in. They both don't want Trump to win in any way or fashion at all, and this has lit an extreme fire under Jimmy's a** to continue to tell it like it is and be real to himself."
The suspect in the Kirk case is Tyler Robinson, a young man who grew up in a conservative household in southern Utah but was enmeshed in "leftist ideology." His parents told investigators he had turned politically left and pro-LGBTQ rights in the last year.
