Assam CM and Congress Chief Clash Over Zubeen Garg's Death Probe

A fierce confrontation has erupted between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and APCC president Gaurav Gogoi over the circumstances surrounding the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg. CM Sarma has warned that the authorities will take strict action—including naming opposition leaders—against anyone inciting violence related to the ongoing investigation.

Sarma suggested there is an attempt to destabilize Assam, likening the situation to unrest previously seen in Nepal. He emphasized that police cases would be filed against those causing public disturbances during tribute events and gatherings for Zubeen Garg. Sarma explicitly mentioned that Gaurav Gogoi is also likely to face police questioning, and insisted the government would proceed forcefully, as it did during the anti-CAA protests.

On the other hand, Gaurav Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of influencing and obstructing the inquiry into Zubeen Garg’s death. Gogoi asserted that the people of Assam want transparent answers about the circumstances and are not interested in morality debates or character judgments. He claimed instead that the Chief Minister’s efforts seem aimed at protecting event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, who had invited Zubeen Garg to Singapore.

Gogoi further alleged that the Sarma government is working to shield Mahanta, pointing to a close, longstanding relationship between the Chief Minister and the Mahanta family. He appealed to Sarma to refrain from interfering with the investigation and putting personal connections ahead of justice for Zubeen Garg.
