What is the first thing to do after getting stung?

Remove the sting

The doctor says, wasp stings usually do not get stuck in the skin, but if the sting is visible, remove it gently with clean pincers. You do not have to apply too much pressure while doing this, this can spread the poison further.

Ice or cold water compress

Wrap ice on the stung area and keep it for 10-15 minutes. This provides relief from swelling, burning and pain. If ice is not available, you can also compress it with cold water.

Wash with clean water and soap

Wash the stung area with clean and lukewarm water. This removes bacteria and reduces the risk of infection.

Apply an antiseptic

After cleaning the wound, apply antiseptic cream or lotion there. This will prevent infection and the wound will heal quickly.

Doctor says, apart from all these methods, you can also adopt some easy home remedies. Like-

  • Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it on the stung area or
  • Applying aloe vera gel also provides cooling effect and reduces swelling.

When is it necessary to go to the doctor?

Dr. Rinki says, some people may have an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a wasp sting, which can be fatal. In such a situation, if you

  • Difficulty breathing
  • swelling of the throat or face
  • feeling dizzy, nauseous, or faint; or
  • If you notice symptoms like rash or itching all over the body, then immediately consult a doctor and get it checked.
