KOCHI: The Department of Fisheries, in collaboration with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), is organizing a workshop to showcase the use of drone technology in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. This event will take place on Friday at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Kochi, Kerala.
The workshop will feature presentations by NFDB and innovative startups, highlighting the transformative impact of drone technology on the fisheries industry. A live demonstration of drones will demonstrate practical applications such as fish transportation, feed dispensing, and deploying life jackets for emergency rescue operations.
The initiative aims to spotlight advanced technology in fisheries, offering modern solutions to challenges in the sector. Approximately 700 fishermen and fisherwomen are expected to attend, underscoring the community’s interest in sustainable, technology-driven growth.
This project aligns with the Prime Minister’s Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which promotes sustainable and inclusive development in fisheries. Drones offer innovative approaches to tasks like water sampling, disease monitoring, feed management, fish transport, precision fishing, and stock assessment.
Alongside the drone demonstrations, the event will include the distribution of “Cadalmin BSF PRO,” a specialized fish feed developed to support sustainable aquaculture. Additionally, a booklet titled “EG Sailas Center of Excellence” will be launched, showcasing key advancements in the field.
In another effort to boost marine science collaboration, the Marine Biological Association of India (MBAI) will launch a National Symposium to connect marine science experts across the country.
On the same day, the Department of Fisheries, with support from the DG Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Ports, and Waterways, will hold a ‘One-Day Interactive Workshop’ at the Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and Engineering Training (CIFNET) in Kochi. This workshop will address the registration, survey, and certification of fishing vessels, helping coastal State and UT fisheries departments to gain technical expertise in vessel registration and renewal processes.
