Prada Unveils Stylish Spacesuit for NASA's Artemis III Mission

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Prada has teamed up with Axiom Space to create a new spacesuit for NASA's Artemis III moon mission, scheduled for 2026. This unique partnership aims to blend fashion with functionality, making space exploration more appealing to the public.

The new spacesuit, known as the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, represents a significant leap in design. Russell Ralston, the executive vice president for extravehicular activity at Axiom Space, described it as a "revolution in the design of spacesuits," likening it to a luxury sports car for astronauts. While its sleek white exterior features gray articulated patches at the knees and elbows and distinct red stripes, it retains many characteristics of traditional spacesuits.

Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada's chief marketing officer, explained that the idea originated from the brand's extensive experience in custom garment creation and its past investment in the Luna Rossa America's Cup team. Initially considering a project related to Mars, Bertelli quickly pivoted to the moon, recognizing its closer proximity.

Bertelli noted that the collaboration with Axiom made sense, as spacesuits combine science, engineering, and artistry, designed specifically for the human body. Ralston emphasized that the suit must be flexible, comfortable for various body types, and aesthetically appealing.

A dedicated team of Prada employees worked closely with Axiom, traveling between Milan and Houston to focus on innovative materials and techniques. While functionality takes precedence in the suit’s design, subtle design elements, like the red stripes echoing the Linea Rossa logo, add a touch of Prada’s signature style.

The partnership aims to excite the public about space exploration through fashion. Past collaborations in the space industry have included costume designers from popular series and brands working on uniforms for space missions, highlighting the intersection of pop culture and aerospace.

While the spacesuit will feature American flag patches and Axiom’s logo, it will not include the iconic Prada triangle. Bertelli stated that this initiative is an opportunity to make space exploration more relatable to people, acknowledging the inherent risks involved in such innovative ventures.

Both Prada and Axiom see this collaboration as a stepping stone towards a larger business opportunity in the emerging space economy. As more commercial activities move into space, the demand for specialized attire is expected to grow.

Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, co-creative directors of the brand, expressed their excitement about the project, indicating plans for additional complementary items for the mission in the future. Bertelli concluded, "This is the beginning... You never know if you never start."
