Carlos Alcaraz has responded after Andy Murray told Wimbledon interviewers to ask the two-time defending champion about their round of golf. The former world No. 1s have been out on the course several times over the last week, with Murray winning the first time and Alcaraz "getting revenge" a few days later.
But they played a decisive round ahead of the Spaniard's fourth-round match at Wimbledon, and Murray publicly dug Alcaraz out on social media, tweeting: "We played the deciding match this afternoon. Maybe ask him what happened after the next match."
On-court interviewer Rishi Persad obliged and quizzed Alcaraz about their latest result after the world No. 2 beat Andrey Rublev 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4 6-4.
"I know a couple of nights ago you were kind enough to let us know how your ongoing battle with Andy Murray has been at golf. You said it was 1-1 after the first two games of golf, Andy Murray says the decider took place yesterday, what happened?" he asked.
The Centre Court fans burst out laughing, and Alcaraz had a cheeky grin on his face. "He said that? I didn't remember playing any match yesterday?" he replied.
Alcaraz confirmed that it was retired star Murray who came out on top - but only because he "let him".
He joked: "Yeah, I mean, I had to show up. I have to say, he beat me so I just - yeah. We are playing in his home so it would be really bad for him, you know, if I beat him so I let him win once.
"But yeah, I lost against him as a player, as a coach, on the golf course, so I'm not going to play against him any more!"
Alcaraz will now have to face another Brit on the tennis court as he meets Cameron Norrie in the quarter-final on Tuesday. The world No. 2 had never faced a home player at Wimbledon before this year - now he's onto his second.
The Spanish star, who beat British qualifier Oliver Tarvet in round two, said: "I'm going to play against another British player, I think I've never played against one before, and this tournament, it's going to be the second time.
"So I will try to enjoy as much as I can. A quarter-final in Wimbledon is super special. As I said in the first round, every time that I can step on this beautiful court, it is a gift, so I have to make the most of the time that I'm playing here.
"It's going to be really, really difficult. Cam, I know him pretty well. He's playing great but it's going to be an interesting one. I'm just excited about playing in another quarter-final here.
Alcaraz has a winning 4-2 record against Norrie but the pair have not faced each other since the 2023 Rio Open final, when the world No. 2 looked on his way to winning before he got injured and Norrie stormed to the title.
