I've always enjoyed a spot of golf since having the odd lessons as a kid. However, I have to admit, I was never very good. These days, I'm more into simply enjoying the golfcore aesthetic around the sport.
Now with the highly anticipated release of Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix and President Trump's golf trip to his Scottish courses starting today, golf is very much in the news this weekend.
Ahead of this week's "golfcore moment", I headed north of Inverness to Dornoch Station, on the eastern coast of the Scottish Highlands.
Marine & Lawn recently revamped the historic hotel, which is a short stroll from Royal Dornoch Golf Club, considered to be one of the greatest courses in the world and a crown jewel of the sport.

According to Marine & Lawn, the design of each of their hotels is inspired by the destination's coastal positioning, rich golf history, and legendary storytelling. Located right on the seafront, the refurbishment of this classy but unpretentious establishment has gone for a stylish modern spin on the traditional Highlands aesthetic. Inside, next to a large lobby laden with colourful furniture and golf-club decked pillars, is the incredible Bar Ross. Scottish tartan and stag's heads line the walls above smooth wooden paneling, as local musicians play Highland music by the large billiards table. A great spot for a game and a cocktail or local whisky.
Across the hall is a small dining room called The Golden Gorse, offering local favourites. The highlights we tried included their steak and full Scottish breakfast, while a more relaxed menu with fish and chips and similar options is available in the bar. Upstairs, the colourful trad-modern chic continues in a very comfortable room overlooking the putting green between the hotel's entrance and the beach. Whether you're an adventurous seasoned golfer or just there to relax among the old school Scottish vibes, the authentic Dornoch Station is well worth a stay. To find out more, click here.
