It is too early to draw any firm conclusions about the cause of a horrific collision that left multiple fans injured during what should have been a joyous trophy parade to celebrate their team's title victory. But with emotions invariably running high, it is clear that the authorities have learned valuable lessons from last July's tragedy which saw toxic speculation and incitement to violence rapidly fill an information vacuum with disastrous consequences.
Merseyside Police moved quickly to identify the alleged driver of the vehicle at the centre of last night's incident as a 53-year-old white British man. While this of course may have little bearing on the final determination of cause and motive, and police must be allowed to investigate thoroughly and without prejudice, it should serve to pause to those who would exploit such tragedies as a pretext to sow discord and propagate violence. Such actions serve no useful purpose in a civilised society and we should all abhor them.
We would echo the words of Liverpool FC, who said in a statement: "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident."
