Donald Trump is set to make a major announcement from the White House just 24 hours before the eyes of the world turn to his historic meeting with Vladmimir Putin in Alaska. The US and Russian leaders will meet face-to-face in the state's largest city Anchorage on Friday to discuss a potential peace plan to bring the Russia-Ukraine war to an end.
Ukraine's President Volodymr Zelensky, who will not be present on Friday, has expressed doubt over any deal being reached without a Ukrainian delegation present. Zelensky has also ruled out ceding any territory to Moscow as part of a peace plan. In a phone call shared on the White House X account, Rapid Response 47, President Trump gave some indication of his own thoughts about what his meeting with Putin would achieve. He said: "I don't know that we are going to get an immediate ceasefire, I'm more interested in a an immediate peace deal, getting peace fast. Depending on what happens with my meeting, I'm going to be calling up President Zelensky and let's get him over to wherever we're going to meet."
