US Open issue statement after Aryna Sabalenka match cancelled in sad circumstances

US Open bosses issued a heartfelt statement after Aryna Sabalenka's match against Marketa Vondrousova was cancelled in unfortunate circumstances. The two players were supposed to face off in the quarter-finals but Sabalenka was ultimately handed a walkover. Vondrousova was forced to withdraw just hours before the match was scheduled to begin after picking up an injury.

Sky Sports presenter Gigi Salmon said the former Wimbledon champion 'left the practice court in tears' shortly before pulling out of the tournament. Her meeting with Sabalenka was due to be the first of two matches in the night session at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Following the news that Vondrousova had withdrawn from the match, US Open bosses issued a short statement on social media.

They posted a picture of the 26-year-old alongside the caption: "Well wishes to you, Marketa. We hope for a smooth recovery."

Sabalenka also shared a touching message after Vondrousova pulled out, writing on Instagram: "So sorry for Marketa after all she's been through.

"She has been playing amazing tennis and I know how badly this must hurt for her. Take care of yourself and I hope you can recover quickly. Love Aryna."

Announcing her decision to withdraw from the match, Vondrousova said: "It breaks my heart that I can't step on court today at the US Open because of the injury I picked up in my last match.

"This place is so special to me, exactly one year ago I was in surgery, not even sure if I would ever return. Being back here, competing again and enjoying such beautiful matches has meant more to me than words can say. Thankful for all the love and support."

Tim Henman, who had been watching Vondrousova on the practice courts, was unsure whether she was struggling with her wrist, shoulder or another area.

He told Sky Sports: "She was out on the practice court and just started to hit some balls on the baseline and suddenly hit one forehand and doubled over in pain, more to the side of the court.

"It looked like she was very distressed and obviously distraught, and then we've just heard that she's obviously had to pull out, which is hugely disappointing for her, she was playing some great tennis."

Sabalenka will go up against Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals, with the American beating Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets to book her place in the last four.
