GTA 6 release date finally unveiled as Rockstar confirms plans to delay game until 2026

After more than a year without any sign of a release date or new trailer, developer Rockstar Games has officially confirmed plans to delay 6 until next year.

Originally scheduled to launch this autumn, GTA 6 has now been given a May 26, 2026 release date by .

In a statement to fans, the company has promised to share more information soon, which hopefully means a new trailer is on the way.

The news comes just days after an insider promised to in the coming weeks.

"Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026," reads a Rockstar post.

"We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.

"With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.

"We look forward to sharing more information with you soon."

Following news of the delay, Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive's share prices have dropped by 16% at the time of writing.

The company will hold its latest financial earnings call in the coming weeks, where it will reveal new projections based on the latest news.

Take-two Interactive's other gaming companies include 2K, which recently announced plans to bring the Borderlands 4 release date forward to September 12.

2K Games will also publish a new entry in the Mafia series, titled Mafia: The Old Country. The new Mafia game is still pencilled in for a 2025 launch.

As you can see from the trailer above, Grand Theft Auto 6 will take place in the state of Leonida, which is based on Florida.

Rockstar explains: "Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet."

The previously released trailer gives fans a look some of the map locations as seen from the skies above. This includes locations based on the Florida Keys, as well as Miami beach and more.

The trailer also hints at a , which will up the scale to never-before-seen levels.
