Kolkata: The city and other parts of Bengal are preparing for a wet week ahead as a cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea is expected to bring heavy rainfall. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast light to moderate rains, with some areas likely to experience heavier downpours between October 23 and 26. The weather system, which could intensify into a depression, is being closely monitored.
Cyclonic Circulation and Rainfall PredictionsAccording to the RMC, the cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above sea level and is currently located over the central Andaman Sea. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea on October 21. This system is likely to move northwestwards and may develop into a depression around October 23, bringing rains to Kolkata and southern Bengal.RMC weather scientist HR Biswas stated that while the system could intensify further, it is too early to predict whether it will develop into a cyclone. Regardless, the system is expected to bring widespread rainfall across Bengal. Government Preparedness and Weather WarningsIn response to the weather forecast, Bengal’s chief secretary has instructed district administrations to remain on alert and have relief materials ready in case of any emergencies. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deeper parts of the Bay of Bengal from October 22 to 23, as the sea is expected to be rough, with winds reaching speeds of 35-45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h. Kolkata Sees Early ShowersKolkata experienced a heavy downpour on Friday, lasting for nearly an hour, due to a low-pressure system. The city is likely to see more rain in the coming week as the weather system intensifies. The Alipore Meteorological Department has issued a forecast for heavy rainfall in some parts of West Bengal, especially between October 23 and 24.You may also like
