Shirish Kunder’s Jaan-E-Mann and Farhan Akhtar’s persuasive Don were pitted against each other for Diwali in 2006 . But the interesting part of this box office duel was the pact that the two Khans had about not expressing any hostility towards one another’s films, at least in public. Salman actually made it a point to promote Shah Rukh's Don at the promotion party of his film Jaan-E-Mann. With his gesture, Salman tried to put an end to speculation about cold vibes between the two actors. He openly announced on stage, "Jab aap Jaan-E-Mann dekhne jaoge... lage haath Don bhi dekh lena. Bahut rocking film bani hai ."He added that he's also emotionally attached to Don because his father co-wrote the script of the original film. When the news of Salman promoting Don reached Shah Rukh Khan, he made it a point to return the favour by mentioning Salman's Jaan-E-Mann at the media meet of Don too. The problems between the two superstars began when Salman created a scene with Aishwarya Rai on the sets of Chalte Chalte, a film that Shah Rukh produced and acted in. Later, at choreographer and director Farah Khan's wedding bash, the two patched up. That time too, it was Salman who made the first move by hugging SRK. Eventually, Shah Rukh’s Don was a hit while Salman’s Jaan-E-Mann sank without a trace…or shall we say sang without a trace, as poetry and music played a pivotal part in the storytelling. Sadly, the music score was a letdown. Much of the musical impact came from Gulzar's tongue-in-cheek lyrics paying a homage to that feeling of lovelorn wistfulness and, of course, the central performances, especially Salman Khan. The normally-lazy actor creates an endearing graph as a cocky arrogant wannabe film star who turns into a sobbing mass of fatherly feeling when he realises he has a baby from the wife whom he once deserted. For the rest, the film suffered from a congenital weirdness. Wonder what happened to Shirish Kunder’s filmmaking aspirations.
