CM flies commercial instead of private jet to cut costs

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Majhi travelled like a regular passenger on a commercial flight instead of using a private jet on Wednesday as he flew to New Delhi to take a connecting flight to Chandigarh where he will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Nayab Singh Saini as Haryana CM at Panchkula on Thursday. Sources said Majhi and his wife, Priyanka, flew on a Vistara flight to Delhi.

Sources said for Majhi’s three-day travel plan to Chandigarh on Thursday and to Mumbai for an investors’ meet on Friday and his return to Bhubaneswar on Saturday, his staff members had suggested him a choice between a 13-seater Legacy 650 and 8-seater Falcon 2000 chartered flights. The cost would have crossed Rs 1 crore in both cases. The 13-seater was priced at Rs 91.22 lakh plus 18% GST and extra costs for crew members’ accommodation, among other charges. The eight-seater was Rs 78.55 lakh plus 18% GST, besides other charges. “The CM was of the view that there was no need to spend so much from public exchequer on his travel. He asked us to book him a seat on regular commercial flights and started his tour a day earlier,” an officer in the CMO said.

Coming from a modest background, Majhi, who was once a schoolteacher, has risen through the ranks to become the CM. Known for being soft-spoken with a down-to-earth yet firm approach, the 52-year-old Santhal tribal leader calls himself a people’s CM, a title one finds his supporters agreeing with.

Apart from Majhi, the two deputy CMs, K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, are also scheduled to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Saini.

They are also scheduled to attend the meeting of CMs and deputy CMs of NDA-governed states in Chandigarh.

From Chandigarh, Majhi will fly to Mumbai to attend a conference on chemicals and petrochemicals sector to be chaired by Union chemicals and fertilisers minister, J P Nadda, on Friday.
