How Cauvery flows into your taps in Bengaluru

Send Push
BENGALURU: Cauvery water , released from Krishnarajasagar, travels 95 km downstream to reach the Shiva Barrage near Malavalli in Mandya district. Water is drawn through gravity pits and sent to the Shiva Balancing Reservoir, 2.5 km away, via canals.

From the Shiva Balancing Reservoir, water is sent to the TK Halli treatment and pumping station, 7 km away, through dedicated pipelines by gravitational pull.

At TK Halli, the water is treated for turbidity and undergoes chlorination, aluminium sulphate, and alum treatment.

After aeration, water is pumped to the Jakkegowdana Doddi pumping station, 21 km away and 70 metres high, through 3-metre diameter pipelines.

The water is further pumped to the Harohalli pumping station, 27 km away and 75 metres high.

At Harohalli station, treated water is pumped to Tataguni pumping station, 20 km away and 150 metres high, through 3-metre diameter pipelines.

From there, water is pumped to the Vajarahalli distribution point, 6 km away and 160 metres high.

The treated water is distributed to west and east Bengaluru through multiple ground-level reservoirs (GLRs), with 4 GLRs in the east and 3 in the west, spanning 110 km.

The pumping stations, powered by Japanese machinery and French technology, use six 3,500HP pumps to lift 150 MLD of water each.
