Jaipur: Unidentified robbers brutally murdered a 50-year-old woman by severing both her legs and slitting her throat and robbed her of about 1.5kg of silver anklets she was wearing in the Gangapur City area of Sawai Madhopur district Sunday morning.
The severed legs were later found dumped in a nearby pond, sending shockwaves through the village and triggering a huge protest by residents. The incident took place in Zahira village near Bamanwas. The victim, Urmila Devi, had gone to the nearby forest early in the morning to collect firewood, according to Bamanwas SHO Rakesh Kumar Sharma. When she failed to return by noon, her family began searching for her. Hours later, her body was discovered lying in a field with a deep neck wound and both legs missing.
Her silver anklets, estimated to weigh around 1.5kg, were also missing. Further search led to the discovery of her severed legs dumped in a nearby pond by her relatives. The gruesome killing sparked outrage in the village.
Enraged locals protested with Urmila's body on Bamanwas-Gadhmora road, blocking the route and shouting slogans. They demanded Rs 1 crore as compensation and a govt job for the victim's family. The villagers also demanded the arrest of the accused within 24 hours and an autopsy done on the victim by a medical board.
Protesters have refused to allow the post-mortem until their demands were met and the accused apprehended. Senior police and administration officers rushed to the protest site to calm the villagers. Police officials said that teams have been formed to trace the robbers.
