LUDHIANA: A woman from Odisha, exploiting a newly launched shipping company, orchestrated a drug-smuggling operation that stretched across Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab.
Phulsi Devi booked nine courier shipments of concealed cannabis to various locations. Acting on a tip-off, the Ludhiana police intercepted a parcel bound for the city’s Haibowal area, recovering 7.95 kilograms of the contraband.
The bust led to filing of a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Shimlapuri police station against Phulsi Devi, owner of St Meirj Logistics, and Haibowal resident Raj Kumar, who was to receive the shipment.
The police acted swiftly after a representative from the shipping company informed them of the smuggling ring, following an earlier incident in Odisha that had linked Phulsi Devi to illegal drug shipments.
Inspector Balwinder Singh, station house officer (SHO), Shimlapuri police station, revealed that the courier company had been alerted after the Odisha Police had seized cannabis from a courier linked to Phulsi.
The firm found in an internal review that Phulsi had booked nine additional parcels, one of which had reached Ludhiana already.
The company’s local representative contacted the police, who then traced and seized the Ludhiana-bound parcel, said the SHO. Investigations revealed that the address for delivery was fake, Balwinder added.
The SHO further claimed to have found that the shipping company also ran an ecommerce platform, but while the e-commerce parcels were scanned regularly, those from the private clients were not. Phulsi took advantage of this loophole to smuggle cannabis undetected, the officer revealed.
