In its 15th season, the much-loved Indian Idol will witness the drama unfold when Amritsar’s Lakshya Mehta found himself in hot water with the judges. The 23-year-old, who sang “Tum Kya Mile” and “Pehli Nazar Mein”, hoped to impress the judges – Badshah, Shreya Ghoshal and Vishal Dadlani with his smooth vocals. But instead, his audition took a shocking turn when the judges criticised him for copying other famous singers!
While his unique voice and singing prowess caught everyone’s attention, the judges spurred him to embrace his originality and step out of the shadows of his inspirations. Vishal was the first judge to stop Lakshya’s audition mid-way, and his frustration was evident as he pointed out, “Aap original singers ke inflections aapke gaane mein daal rahein hai - first with Arijit, then with Atif. You’re singing well, par aap apna nahi gaa rahe ho.Yeh Indian Idol hai na, yahaan se idol nikaltein hai; yahaan aap nakal kar ke aage nahi badoge. You perform in public, right? Often in shows, when you imitate other artists, you win praise from the audience because they want to listen to the songs as they know it. But until you don’t make an identity of your own, you will never become a star. You cannot become an Indian Idol singing in someone else’s style. This is my problem.”
Vishal further advised Lakshya and the other contestants, saying, “I really like your voice but I really don’t like the imitating situation. Aap sikho zarur, yeh bahut bade kalakaar hai aur bahut acche kalakaar hai; but jis din aap unki nakal karne lag jaoge, unki style apna loge toh aap hotel, restaurant mein gaate reh jaoge. To be an artist, you really have to find your own space.”
