Why Apple may have picked Samsung over LG for the most important component of 'foldable iPhone' and what makes it is an 'unusual strategy' for the company

Apple has reportedly selected Samsung Display as the sole supplier for the foldable OLED screens destined for its highly anticipated " iPhone Fold ," according to a report highlighted by AppleInsider. The display is considered a crucial element, essentially defining the functionality of the foldable device. In a report, citing sources from Business Korea, AppleInsider notes that Apple has finalised its decision to partner with Samsung Display for the initial rollout of its foldable screen technology. While Apple typically employs a multi-vendor strategy for its components, including LG Display and BOE, the report suggests that Samsung will be the exclusive provider for the first iteration of the folding iPhone screen.

Samsung Display has been one of the largest partner for Apple iPhones since years. However, the company is not the only one.

What made Apple pick Samsung Display and not go with LG at all
The AppleInsider report points to claims that Samsung Display possessed a significant "technical edge in minimizing the screen crease," a factor reportedly prioritized by Apple in the component's design. Furthermore, the report indicates that Samsung's extensive experience with its own line of foldable smartphones also played a role in the decision.

According to the Business Korea report, mass production of these foldable OLED panels is expected to commence in either late 2025 or early 2026. The screens will encompass both a primary, large foldable OLED panel, speculated to be around 7.8 inches, and a smaller 5.5-inch external display.

The report underscores that this decision to rely on a single screen supplier is "an unusual move for Apple," as the company typically utilizes multiple vendors to foster competition, potentially leading to cost reductions and quality improvements.

What may not have worked for LG (for now)
The report suggests that this decision leaves LG Display, a long-standing partner in Apple's supply chain, out of the initial plans despite years of collaborative efforts on foldable display technology. The report references past reports indicating that LG Display was considered an early partner for Apple's foldable OLED endeavors as far back as 2016. Further reports suggested continued collaboration between the two companies on foldable screens in subsequent years, even alongside Samsung.

However, the report concludes by suggesting that while Samsung appears to be the sole supplier for the initial "iPhone Fold," the door may not be entirely closed for LG Display. It says that LG could potentially become involved at a later stage, depending on the success of the first foldable iPhone or for future foldable models.
