NEW DELHI: In the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians on April 22, diplomatic activity between China and Pakistan has intensified as Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Friday.
During the meeting, Zaidong and Sharif discussed the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions. According to a press release by the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, Jiang met Sharif on Thursday and reiterated China’s earlier call for both sides to act with restraint.
“China understands Pakistan's legitimate security concerns and supports its efforts to safeguard national sovereignty and security interests,” the release quoted Jiang as saying. He also voiced support for “a prompt and impartial investigation into the incident,” calling upon both nations “to exercise restraint, meet each other halfway, properly manage differences, and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability.”
Sharif, during the meeting, briefed Jiang on the latest developments and conveyed Pakistan’s gratitude for China’s proactive diplomatic role. According to the press release, Sharif “expressed appreciation for China's constructive efforts to promote peace and stability in South Asia and to help de-escalate the situation.”
Furthermore, Sharif signalled his openness to continued engagement with regional and international stakeholders. “Sharif expressed willingness to continue communication and coordination with all parties to jointly prevent further escalation and uphold peace and stability in South Asia,” the statement concluded.
This marks the second significant interaction between the two “all-weather allies” following the Pahalgam massacre, which China has strongly condemned.
On April 27, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi to update him on the deteriorating situation between India and Pakistan. Wang emphasized that “combating terrorism is a shared responsibility of the whole world,” reaffirming China’s position on the issue.
Wang further noted, “Beijing supports an impartial investigation as soon as possible, as the conflict does not serve the fundamental interests of either India or Pakistan, nor does it contribute to regional peace and stability.”
Reiterating Beijing’s close ties with Islamabad, he said, “As an ironclad friend and an all-weather strategic cooperative partner, China fully understands Pakistan's legitimate security concerns and supports Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty and security interests.”
The following day, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, responding to a media query on the India-Pakistan conflict, welcomed efforts to de-escalate tensions.
“China welcomes all measures to ‘cool down’ the current situation between the two countries, including a ‘swift and fair investigation’ into the terror attack,” he stated. Guo emphasised that “India and Pakistan are both important countries in South Asia, and the harmonious coexistence between the two countries is crucial to regional peace, stability and development.”
