US President Donald Trump announced that he plans to impose sweeping tariffs on foreign-made movies and furniture, accusing other countries of “stealing” from the United States.
In one post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.’ California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit! Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump had signaled plans to impose such tariffs earlier in May but provided few specifics, leaving entertainment industry executives uncertain.
Trump followed up with a second post targeting furniture manufacturing, singling out North Carolina, which he said has “completely lost its furniture business to China and other Countries.” He added: “In order to make North Carolina… and other Countries, GREAT again, I will be imposing substantial Tariffs on any Country that does not make its furniture in the United States. Details to follow!!!”
Notably the US president has not announced the details for when these tariffs will be implemented.
The announcements come amid Trump’s ongoing focus on domestic industry and protectionist trade policies , with the help of tariffs. Before this, the latest sweeping tariffs included 100% tariff on foreign-made pharma products.
