A person of Indian origin (PIO), Ishaan Sharma, was arrested after he started a fight with a fellow flyer aboard Miami-Philadelphia flight for "no reason", WSVN reported citing officials.
Keanu Evans, the man who was attacked, said he felt compelled to set the record straight after video of his altercation with Sharma spread across social media. Footage recorded by fellow passengers showed Evans and Sharma locked in a fight as bystanders begged them to stop. The 21-year-old was left with a black eye eventually.
“Let him go,” WSVN quoted a passenger saying. “Stop, let him go.”
“Sir, you have to sit down,” a flight attendant, trying to break the fight, said.
Recalling the incident, Evans told 7News, “What I hate is that the video doesn’t capture what started the whole thing, you know? It only captures me defending myself.”
“He was doing some, like, dark laugh like, ha ha ha ha ha. And he was saying things like, you, you puny mortal man, if you challenge me, it will result in your death. He kept threatening me with death. That’s what made me get up and press the button above me and I just turned around and I looked at him and I responded to him. A lot was going on, and immediately he just got up and he puts his forehead on my forehead like he was challenging me,” he said.
"You know, he’s looking at me very angrily and we’re looking eye to eye, forehead to forehead, and then he just grabs me by the throat and just starts choking me. At that moment it was, you know, fight or flight responses kick in. I’m in a tight, confined space on an aircraft, and all I can do is just defend myself,” he added.
After the flight landed Monday night, deputies arrested Ishaan Sharma, who had a facial cut requiring stitches. Evans expressed regret over the incident saying he didn’t want people to misunderstand his character. Sharma now faces a battery charge and remains in custody.
