As Canada’s federal election enters a critical phase, Pierre Poilievre , leader of the opposition and Conservative Party leader, has hit back at US President Donald Trump ’s call for Canada to become the 51st state.
Poilievre strongly rejected the idea, saying that only Canadians should decide their future.
On Sunday, Poilievre took to social media platform X, addressing Trump’s remarks, and urged the US President to stay out of Canada’s political affairs. "President Trump, stay out of our election. The only people who will decide the future of Canada are Canadians at the ballot box," Poilievre said.
He continued: "Canada will always be proud, sovereign and independent and we will NEVER be the 51st state."
Poilievre further used the opportunity to advocate for a change in government. He argued that Canadians now have the chance to vote for a government that would stand firm against external pressures and work to strengthen the country from within. "Today Canadians can vote for change so we can strengthen our country, stand on our own two feet and stand up to America from a position of strength," Poilievre said.
Trump doubles down on 51st state proposal
Earlier that day, President Trump once again suggested that Canada should become part of the United States. He wished Canada good luck ahead of its election, encouraging them to elect a leader who would make Canada the 51st state, promising various economic benefits, including tax cuts, military expansion, and unrestricted trade.
"Good luck to the Great people of Canada. Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the World, have your Car, Steel, Aluminum, Lumber, Energy, and all other businesses, QUADRUPLE in size, WITH ZERO TARIFFS OR TAXES, if Canada becomes the cherished 51st State of the United States of America," Trump posted on his Ttureplatform.
Furthermore, Trump described how Canada would benefit from the union, claiming, "No more artificially drawn line from many years ago. Look how beautiful this land mass would be. Free access with NO BORDER. ALL POSITIVES WITH NO NEGATIVES. IT WAS MEANT TO BE!"
